How Can I Tell Why a Message was Marked as Spam?

When a message is tagged as spam specific headers are added to the message. Headers contain information that is present in the e-mail but by default is not viewable by the recipient. Instructions on viewing headers is below.

You will see a series of lines starting with an X. They are similar to the one below:

X-Declude-Note: Scanned by Declude 4.3.14 for spam

You will see additional lines if the spam filtering process finds problems with the message. The spam engine is "scoring" each message by adding a value to the weight each time it finds a problem. You can see the final weight at the bottom of the headers.

Often this header information can be useful in helping the sender's mail server admin diagnose the issue with their mailserver and why our server is marking their messages as spam.

To view headers in Outlook/Outlook Express:
  1. Double-click the message
  2. Choose view -> options
  3. At the bottom of the dialog box that pops up you can scroll through all of the headers
To view headers in webmail:
  1. Click on the message
  2. On the right side of the message near the top there is a link called "header". Click this to display all of the headers.
