Outlook Error 550 not local host not a gateway error message

When sending e-mail to users outside your company (or domain) you get the error "550 not local host not a gateway" or the message stays in your outbox.

Follow the instructions below to rectify issue. 

(For Outlook Express, Outlook 2000 or Windows Mail (Vista) see below.)

For Outlook 2003 / Outlook 2007

1. From the menu bar select 'Tools', then select E-mail Accounts.

2. If prompted: select View or Change existing e-mail accounts, click Next.

3. Highlight the account in question and click "Change".

4. Click the 'More Settings' button. Select the 'Outgoing Server' tab.

5. AtlanticBT servers require SMTP authentication.
    Make sure that “My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication” is checked.
    Make sure that “Use same settings as my incoming mail server” is selected. 
    Click 'Apply' then click 'OK'.

6. Click the 'Test Account Settings' button.
    This function will test all the settings for sending/receiving mail.
    If the settings are configured correctly then all green checkmarks appear. 

        If you do not receive all green checkmarks, recheck your settings,

7. When finished, click 'Next' button then the Finish' button.

8. Create a new email to an outside address.  (For instance a Gmail, Yahoo, Live, etc.. account.)

9. Perform a 'Send/Receive' function.


Outlook Express/Outlook 2000/Windows Mail (Vista)

1. From the menu bar select 'Tools', then select Accounts.

2. Select the 'Mail' tab.

3. Highlight the account if not selected, click the 'Properties' button.

4. Select the 'Servers' tab. 

5. AtlanticBT servers require SMTP authentication.
        Under 'Outgoing Mail Server'
        Make sure the “My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication” box is checked.
        Make sure that “Use same settings as my incoming mail server” is selected. 

6. Click 'Apply' then click 'OK'

7. Click Close.

8. Create a new email to an outside address.  (For instance a Gmail, Yahoo, Live, etc.. account.)

9. Perform a 'Send/Receive' function.

Email Problems?

Check these first:

  1. User name is entered as your full email address and that your pasword is entered correctly.
  2. SMTP authentication is enabled
  3. Server names are one of the following:
    • mail1.atlanticbt.com
    • mail2.atlanticbt.com
    • mail4.atlanticbt.com
    • mail.domainname.com
    • mx.domainname.com

Time taken to generate the page 0.0993 seconds and performed 18 sql queries and used 3.6969 MB of memory
