Outgoing Mail Port 25 Blocked (Cannot send email from a remote location)

  • Time: Less than 15 min
  • Difficulty: Medium

Below are a list of steps to help resolve an issue of sending email from a remote location.

Local ISPs (internet service providers) sometimes intermittently block the default outbound port: 25, from sending email.

This is why we have two ports open: 25 and 587 for sending email.

If this 'fix' doesn't work, then contact your ISP and ask them to assist in setting up your email client to send email using their SMTP servers.

Outlook Express/Vista Mail
1. Open Outlook Express.
2. Locate and click on the 'Tools' menu.
3. Select 'Accounts' (see below)
4. Click on 'Mail' tab.
5. Select the 'AtlanticBT' mail account.
6. Click 'Properties' button.
7. Select 'Advanced' Tab.
8. Locate Outgoing Mail (SMTP Port)
    -By default is: 25
9. Change port number to: 587
10. Click 'Apply'
11. Click 'OK'.
12. Click 'Close'
13. Check to make sure nothing is in the 'Outbox', if there are messages in the outbox, either delete them or move them to the 'Drafts' folder.
14. Test your email setting by sending an email to: abtsupport@gmail.com.

If your settings are configured properly this email will be sent out and an automatic response will be received in your mailbox within a few minutes.

Outlook 2003/Outlook 2007
1. Open Microsoft Outlook.
2. Locate and click on the 'Tools' menu.
3. Select Email Accounts..
4. Select 'View or change existing email accounts' button and click 'Next'.
5. Select/Highlight the 'AtlanticBT' mail account.
6. Click the 'Change' button.
7. Click on the 'More Settings' button. (in lower right-hand corner)
8. Click the 'Advanced' tab.
9. Locate Outgoing Mail (SMTP Port)
-By default is: 25
10. Change port number to 587.
11. Click Apply.
12. Click Ok.
13. Click Next.
14. Click Finish.
15. Check to make sure nothing is in the 'Outbox', if there are messages in the outbox, either delete them or move them to the 'Drafts' folder.
16. Test your email setting by sending an email to: abtsupport@gmail.com.

If your settings are configured properly this email will be sent out and an automatic response will be received in your mailbox within a few minutes.
